Mr. William Phi serves as an Assistant Director at Friendswood High School. Before coming to Friendswood, he taught in Fort Bend ISD and Leander ISD.
Mr. Phi previously served as the Associate Band Director at Elkins High School in Fort Bend ISD, where his concert bands consistently received Superior Ratings in UIL Concert & Sightreading and was recognized by the Foundation of Music Education as a Citation of Excellence Commended Winner. He also established and led the “Gold’n Blues” Jazz Ensemble at Elkins, consistently earning Superior Ratings and Outstanding Performance awards at numerous jazz festivals and having students place into TMEA Region Jazz and Area Jazz. As the woodwind director for the program, his students have successfully placed at TMEA Region, Area, and All-State Auditions, and have earned numerous accolades at local and statewide competitions. Most recently, the Elkins Saxophone Quartet was invited to perform at the 2025 TMEA Convention, and the Elkins Flute Choir was named the Senior Division Winner of the 2025 Denise Jennings Ensemble Competition at the Houston Flute Fest.
Mr. Phi is a summa cum laude graduate of Texas State University, where he received his Bachelor's of Music in Music Studies (Music Education). He studied flute with Dr. Adah Toland Jones, and voice with Professor Myra Vassian. During his time at Texas State, he served as Principal Flute in the Wind Symphony, Principal Flute in the Symphony Orchestra, Drum Major and Piccolo Section Leader in the Bobcat Marching Band, the Flute Choir, and the Jazz Combo. In 2019, he was named the Winner of the Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the Texas State Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Phi completed his student teaching in Leander ISD at Vista Ridge High School with Mr. Bryan Christian, and earned the TMEA Student Teaching Scholarship and the TMEA Collegiate Music Educator Award.
Mr. Phi's professional affiliations include the Houston Flute Club, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, Young Band Directors of Texas, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Jazz Educators Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association. He currently serves as the President of the Young Band Directors of Texas.
