Brett Nelson is in his third year at Friendswood HS and second year as the Director of Bands. At FHS, his responsibilities include directing Mustang Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert II, and overseeing all other aspects of the program. In 2019, the Mustang Marching Band finished 6th at the UIL 5A State Marching Contest. Prior to Friendswood, Mr. Nelson was the Director of Bands at Jersey Village HS in Houston, TX. While at JVHS, his students were named a 6A UIL State Marching Band Contest Participant, National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Project, TMEA Area Honor Band Finalist, UIL Sweepstakes award winner, and Grand Champion at the Lone Star and Alamo Showcase of Music.
Brett holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Texas State University. Mr. Nelson has served on the brass faculties of Texas Lutheran University and Texas State University. Trumpet teachers have included Raymond Crisara, Dr. Keith Winking, Beth Bronk, and Jack Laumer. Band mentors include Tom Bennett, Denis Kidwell, Eddie Green, Tye Ann Payne, Marion West, Mary Ellen Cavitt, John Stansberry, and Jim Hudson.
Mr. Nelson also has served on the staff of the Blue Knights and Guardians Drum Corps. He has been an instructor for several marching bands throughout the country. His professional memberships include TMEA, TBA, and TMAA. He lives in Alvin with his beautiful wife Courtney and their two kids, Madison and Eli.
